We are an organization conceived in the belief that live instrumental can be fun and engaging for musicians and audience alike.
We are a volunteer-run based in San Francisco for musicians and audiences in SF and the Bay Area. We officially became a California corporation in 2018 and 501(c)(3) in 2019.
We started in 2012 throwing together a concert in a single day. In 2019 we evolved the concept with the idea that an additional rehearsal or two (and a conductor) would open new venues, repertoir and audience. That along with a resolve for better organization and a more organized back office have lead to the organization we are today.
We are brand new and solely driven by donations. If you are in a position to help us out, please check out our donations page
We bring accessibility to live instrumental music by creating abundant concerts in a variety of venues. Our concerts are almost always free and are in public spaces, outside of the concert halls. We bring an informality that welcomes audience into the sometimes stifled world of classical music.
We also make a point of letting the audience know something about the music, its history, or what is special about a piece. Often the music we play is an enigma to folks not familiar with an artform that is sometimes centuries old. Surprise!
We create performances opportunities for musicians who may have other primary occupations and for pros and semi-pros who are looking to play new repertoire or play just for the fun of it. Our goal for musicians is to create performances that are challenging and satisfying.
Most importantly, our first rule of performing with impromptuSF is: NO DRAMA. For many of us, music is (or can be) a refuge from the stress and chaos of our daily lives. At impromptuSF, we seek to create a space that is welcoming, creative, aspirational, and (gasp!) fun.
Currently, performing with impropmtuSF is by invite only. Come check out our councerts and see if this might be a community for you.
